Chapters 11-14

Beau Bokan from Blessthefall

The multiple imagery in this photo demonstrates the movement of the singer.

  • Multiple image: A visual device used to suggest the movement that occurs when a figure is shown in a sequence of slightly overlapping poses in which each successive position suggests movement from the prior position.

Four Year Strong band members, Dan O'Connor & Josh Lyford

This photo doesn't have any color, making it a achromatic photo.
  • Achromatic: Black, gray, or white with no distinctive hues.

Artwork of RIse Against's lead singer Tim Mcilrath

Color symbolism is used in this drawing by only using colors in the figures eyes. Tim Mcilrath really has one brown eye and one blue eye.

  • Color symbolism Employing color to signify human character traits or concepts.

Envy on the Coast's Lead Singer, Ryan Hunter
I edited the color balance and saturation in photoshop, intensifying the cool colors in the photo. The lights shining on the singer are primary colors.

  • Cool color: A color closer to blue on the color wheel.

  • Saturation: hue perceived in a color.

  • Primary colors: The three colors from which all other colors can theoretically be mixed. The primaries of pigments are traditionally presented as red, yellow, and blue, while the primaries of light are red, blue, and green.

Chapters 7- 10

Album cover artwork for Circa Survive's Juturna album

The angle of the artwork suggest a diagonal implied line, moving the eye across one corner to another.
  • Implied line An invisible line created by positioning a series of points so that the eye will connect them and thus create movement across the picture plane

Album Artwork for Muse's Showbiz Album

Abstract is usually the main characteristic when it comes to describing majority of Muse's album covers. The artwork usually lacks in displaying any sources of reality.

  • Abstraction: A visual representation that may have little resemblance to the real world. Abstraction can occur through a process of simplification or distortion in an attempt to communicate an essential aspect of a form or concept.

Silverstein's artwork for their album Discovering The Waterfront

The texture of the background gives off a sense of chaos while the texture of the water is the opposite.

  • Texture: The surface quality of objects that appeals to the tactile sense.

Flyleaf

The band members are some-what overlapping, one slightly behind the other starting with the lead singer on the right, yet its a bit translucent toward the bottom of the picture plane to be able to tell.

  • Overlapping A device for creating an illusion of depth in which some shapes are in front of and partially hide or obscure others.
  • Picture plane The two-dimensional surface on which shapes are organized into a composition.
  • Translucent A situation in which objects, forms, or planes transmit and diffuse light but have a degree of opacity that does not allow clear visibility through the form.

Chapters 1-6

Blink 182

Heres a collage made up of photos from live shows performed by the band Blink 182.
  • Collage: An artwork created by assembling and pasting a variety of materials to a two-dimensional surface.

Edited photos of Hayley Williams made by me.

There is a continuation of faded lines that form a grid between the reflected photos. The photos share a graceful unity.
  • Continuation: A line or edge that continues from one form to another allowing the eye to move smoothly through a composition.
  • Grid: A network of horizontal and vertical intersecting lines that divide spaces and create a framework of areas.
  • Graceful unity: Although each element is essentially the same, the individual elements have slight variations.

Photo of Gwen Stefani while performing with her band No Doubt in NY.

The focal point is emphasized on Gwen Stefani while the crowd behind her is the accent.

  • Accent A secondary focal point that has less emphasis then the primary one.
  • Focal point A compositional device emphasizing a certain area or object to draw attention to the piece and to encourage closer scrutiny of the work.

Lady Gaga is FAR from my favorite but this pop art of her looks kinda cool.
  • Pop art: An art movement originating in the 1960s that sought inspiration from everyday popular culture and the techniques of commercial art.

Rise Against Logo

This is a symbol that represents the band Rise Against.

  • Symbol: An element of design that communicates an idea or meaning beyond that of its literal form.

When reading music, that curved line hovering over the notes means to be played as a legato, meaning to play the multiple notes as one connected, smooth note.
  • Legato: A connecting and flowing rhythm.
